Study Abroad Programs (Outgoing Exchange Students)

Students of Mody University of Science and Technology (MUST) who are interested in participating in exchange programs with international universities should begin their preparations well in advance.

Students may undertake coursework, internships, and/or project work at institutions with which MUST has an Agreement of Cooperation or Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for availing special benefits as per the arrangements with the respective universities. Students may also pursue an exchange program with any reputed university, which may not be currently the academic partner of MUST.

For project/research work at a host institution, the responsibility of identifying a supervisor rests with the student. Students must also obtain approval from the project supervisor at their respective school within MUST if they wish to submit the work completed abroad toward their degree and obtain credit equivalence.

For Students Planning Coursework / Project Work

Students may pursue one and/or two semesters, either in physical or blended mode, for academic coursework, project work, and/or internships.

Application Deadlines

  • Autumn Semester: 31st March
  • Spring Semester: 30th September

Students can register via the application link or through the Office for International Affairs (OIA), via their respective schools, by submitting a refundable deposit of INR 10,000 along with a Statement of Purpose (SOP).

Students who withdraw from the exchange program after their application has been processed and nomination sent to the host institution will be debarred from participating in any international exchange, visit, or internship programs in subsequent semesters.

Steps to Follow

(I) While Applying

  • Refer to the list of academic partners.
  • Plan your visit in such a way that the academic calendar of your degree program is maintained.
  • Identify the university you wish to apply to from the OIA website.
  • Prepare a list of the courses you would otherwise take at MUST during the semester(s) in which you plan to go on exchange.
  • Prepare a table clearly indicating the courses at MUST and their equivalent courses at the host institution, along with your CGPA and SGPA (attach your latest grade card or transcript).
  • For minor-related courses, obtain prior permission from the relevant department offering the minor.
  • Approval must be obtained from the Faculty Coordinator, Head of Department (HOD), Dean, Pro-President, and President for course equivalence.
  • Refer to the host institution’s website to select courses you wish to undertake (choose 2–3 additional courses as alternatives in case preferred courses are unavailable).
  • Write a formal letter addressed to the Dean of your respective School, routed through the Head of your Department, indicating your intent to participate in the exchange program. This should include a request for approval for coursework/project/research work to be undertaken in lieu of the corresponding requirements at MUST.
  • The application must reach the Office for International Affairs (OIA) at least 15 days prior to the host institution’s deadline.
  • Upon receiving approval from the HOD, the Office for International Affairs (OIA) will connect you with the international office of the host institution and provide the relevant application links.  (Note: If the number of applications exceeds the available seats under the exchange program at a host institution, the OIA Committeewill shortlist students based on their profile and portfolio.)
  • The final decision regarding admission rests with the host institution.
  • Students are permitted to proceed for the exchange program only after receiving a formal permission letter from the Academic Office.
  • In most cases, expenses must be borne by the students themselves. Currently, MUST and its associates do not have a mechanism to financially support exchange students.
  • Some universities offer scholarships/awards that may be applied for separately.
  • In certain universities, students may work part-time on campus, including research projects, to offset living expenses. However, MUST and the Office for International Affairs (OIA) do not assist in securing such opportunities; these must be pursued independently by students.

(II) Before Proceeding for the Exchange

  • Sign the declaration form and submit it to the Office for International Affairs (OIA).
  • Submit a photocopy of the offer letter from the foreign university to the OIA and Academic Office for record purposes.
  • Consult the Chief Warden regarding retention or vacation of your hostel room during your exchange period. Retention of accommodation will be chargeable as per hostel fee norms, while vacating requires clearance of dues before the specified deadline.
  • Complete the No Dues process for the preceding semester at MUST (both academic and accommodation-related).
  • Check with the Academic Office for any additional formalities, such as leave application during exchange and next semester registration.

(III) While at the Host Institution

  • Register with the Indian Embassy or Consulate upon arrival.
  • In case of any changes to the approved course plan, consult your faculty advisor and obtain necessary approvals through the Department. The revised plan must also be communicated to the Academic Office and Central Office.
  • If fee payment deadlines fall during your exchange period, ensure arrangements are made for timely payment.
  • Provide the address of the Registrar’s Office if you wish your grade card to be sent to MUST. Alternatively, if you receive it directly, you must submit a copy to MUST for record purposes.

(IV) After Returning to MUST

After returning from the exchange program, you must write to the Head of the Department requesting credit transfer, enclosing your grade card from the host institution along with a copy of the prior approval granted by the HOD.

For Outgoing Freemover Students

Students may opt for a one- or two-semester study abroad program as a freemover at foreign institutions where MUST does not have a formal collaboration. In such cases, the responsibility for ensuring credit and subject equivalence rests entirely with the student, in accordance with the procedures outlined above.

For PhD Research Scholar Exchanges

Most MoUs include provisions for the exchange of research scholars. However, some MoUs may be specific to certain research areas. Students are advised to review the Agreement of Cooperation to determine eligibility. If no specific restrictions are mentioned, the opportunity is open across disciplines.

Some MoUs may include financial support for research scholar exchanges. These may be availed by writing to the MoU Coordinator, with a copy to the Office for International Affairs (OIA), after obtaining approval from the PhD supervisor.

The research plan must be approved by the PhD supervisor at MUST. The responsibility of identifying a co-supervisor at the host institution rests with the PhD scholar and must be approved by the supervisor at MUST. The PhD supervisor must also obtain formal approval from the Dean/Pro-President and/or President to include the host institution faculty member as a co-supervisor, if required.
