Overview
Prof. (Dr.) Amlan Kumar Das completed his doctoral degree from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, under the supervision of Prof. R. C. Srivastava. His doctoral research focused on oscillatory transport across membranes and its biological implications, a field residing at the intersection of biotechnology and bioengineering.
During his doctoral work, Prof. Das developed novel bio-membrane models that demonstrated significant potential as devices for mimicking the sensing mechanisms of taste and smell. He also developed a model of neuronal excitation, contributing foundational insights to the understanding of biological signal transduction and membrane dynamics.
Education
- Ph.D. Physical Chemistry, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi
- M.Sc. Chemistry, Jadavpur University, Kolkata
- B.Sc. (Hons.) Chemistry, Jadavpur University, Kolkata

Research
Prof. Das's research is centred on the study of oscillatory transport phenomena in far-from-equilibrium systems, a domain of critical importance to both biology and the theoretical understanding of instabilities.
It is widely recognised that the living state exists as a non-equilibrium state in the far-from-equilibrium region, where one observes exotic oscillatory phenomena not encountered under equilibrium conditions. Prof. Das's work is grounded in the understanding that most physiological processes relevant to life occur within this region, making its rigorous investigation essential to advancing our comprehension of biological systems
