About the department
The Department of Physics offers comprehensive undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes grounded in positive teaching and a strong research environment. The department regularly evaluates and updates its curricula and programmes to align with emerging international trends in physics. Undergraduate programmes are designed as per NEP 2020 with interdisciplinary, skill enhancement, and value-added courses to prepare students for advanced studies and valuable employment opportunities, including campus recruitment. Graduates are eligible for master’s programmes in all branches of natural sciences.
The department boasts three well-equipped laboratories: General Physics Laboratory, Optics Laboratory, Advanced Physics Laboratory, and Computational Physics Research Laboratory, featuring state-of-the-art instruments capable of supporting a wide range of experiments. These labs enable students to explore concepts in mechanics, optics, heat, electricity, electromagnetism, optoelectronics and modern physics, fostering an understanding of physical measurement and experimental techniques. The equipment for the master’s programme in Physics includes Zeeman Effect apparatus, Frank-Hertz Experiment setups, GM counters, Millikan’s Oil Drop apparatus, and more. The syllabi incorporate Quantum Computing, DFT, ML and AI. The department focuses on both theoretical and practical education. It ensures that students develop a strong foundation in physics, preparing them for further studies, research, and careers in academia and industry.
The students got internships from National research labs, and their dissertations got published as research articles in high-quality journals. The Departmental Alumni qualified NET/JAAM and are well placed.The departmental faculty members are actively engaged in research aligned with the Central Government’s missions, “Vikshit Bharat 2047” and “Net Zero Emissions by 2070.” The faculty have gained valuable international exposure through positions such as postdoctoral fellows and research professors abroad. The core research areas include Computational Materials Science, Photonics, Nonlinear Optics, Nanoscience, and Quantum Computing. Faculty members regularly publish their work in journals of international repute and contribute to books published by leading international publishers such as Taylor & Francis. Our alumni have received prestigious recognitions, including the PM Fellowship. Our PhD graduates are well placed in reputed organizations.
The Department of Physics fosters strong international and national research partnerships, enriching our academic environment and expanding our scientific impact. The department executes a society named Quantum Consortium for the overall skill development of students through academic and other activities.
